  • Manta, SeaWorld’s newest mega attraction will seamlessly transition guests from the awe of encountering rays in underwater flight into the sensation of actually being one. Swooping over sea and sky, Manta will inspire riders with amazing underwater animal habitats, then soar them face-down, in a horizontal position, aboard a manta-inspired flying coaster.
  • Kraken, Orlando’s tallest and only floorless roller coaster, is themed after a massive, mythological underwater beast unleashed from the depths of the sea.
  • Ready for our amazing performances? Lotusphere guests will marvel at our talented animals and trainers in Blue Horizons, a dolphin theatrical performance about a place where sea meets sky in a world of acrobatic dolphins and whales, soaring birds, and leaping water.
  • At Clyde and Seamore Take Pirate Island, the journey begins with the HMS Pinniped setting sail to Pirate Island. This show will be customized with Lotusphere jargon and innuendos.
  • Shamu Rocks is a rock n’ roll concert of unprecedented proportions combining improvisational movements of killer whales with music remixed by some of the hottest rock stars in the industry, including Savage Garden, Cold Play, Jennifer Lopez, Rascal Flats, and Shakira.

2010 Closes Strong and the Momentum Continues into Q1

Deborah Corcoran

by Deborah Corcoran, National Practice Manager for Resource Deployment Services to IBM

In closing out 2010, Davalen had a huge uptick in resource staffing requests across the board in all IBM software applications – everything from upgrades to new application integrations. Despite the international economic challenges, IT staffing held strong.  Davalen customers know that we are the “go to” Business Partner for all things IBM, especially when it comes to our highly skilled and IBM certified consultants.

Q1 is starting out very strong and trending toward more staffing opportunities that are longer in term. The contracting resource requests coming across are for projects that are much more expanded in length than in previous years, especially for Q1/Q2. Customers have started to focus on projects that were set to launch in Q4, but didn’t seem to either get the funding or time ran out due to holiday schedules.

The big push so far is for Lotus Notes Connections installs and integrations with various other IBM software applications such as WebSphere. The WebSphere space seems to be really taking the lead in Q1 as is Portlet Factory.  More and more of our customers are inquiring about our Portlet Factory practice and how they can integrate this application into their current environment.

Our New Years momentum brings us right into our countdown for Lotusphere 2011! Davalen will be exhibiting for the 4th year in a row at Booth # 221. Lotusphere is always such a great venue to share stories and gain important industry information, so please stop by and say “hello.”

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact us for of your IT Staffing requirements and I look forward to seeing you at Lotusphere!

Social Networking and Lotusphere

By Len Barker, Managing Partner – Lotus Practice

Having just completed a gig where my team installed Lotus Connections 3.0 and the new Connections 3.0 Portlets in WebSphere Portal 7, I am pumped to go to Lotusphere and tell the story about how Social Networking can energize business.  And since the developer toolkit for the Connections 3.0 portlets is all Portlet Factory based,  I will also take the opportunity to trumpet the benefits of Portlet Factory development and education from Davalen.

All are invited to stop by the  booth (#221) to hear the details of the first Connections 3.0/Portal 7 implementation.

Snow and Lotusphere

by Dave Jacob, Managing Partner, WebSphere Practice

The first snow of the season in Boston reminds me that its time to get out of town and head for Florida. Luckily, Lotusphere is waiting for me and I’m ready to go!

With the maturity of the Portlet Factory environment, I am looking forward to seeing how the product is being used with Portal, Dashboards, Expeditor and more. It’s also good to see what my Domino friends have been up to since last year. Hard to believe that this product has been around for 20 years and continues to reinvent itself to stay current in the marketplace. Remember when Lotus 4.5 came out and shortly thereafter Lotus 4.6 with html and web support, not to mention LotuScript? Seems like a long time ago.

I wonder what’s new on the horizon…

Lotusphere 2011 Schedule & Agenda

It’s hard to believe we’re just 39 days, 18 hours and 6 minutes (give or take) away from another Lotusphere (thanks to the Lotusphere Blog for the countdown). The sessions have been announced and the agenda is published – it really is sneaking up on us.

This is Davalen’s 4th year exhibiting at the show and we are very excited about our public announcements, demonstrations and of course quality conversation! It is always a busy week full of announcements, labs, meetings and evening events and this year does not seem like it will disappoint! With added tracks, general sessions each day and more chatting about all kinds of tools that fall under the Lotus name, our entire team is working hard behind the scenes to add to the quality of your conference.

While I have you here I just wanted to let you know when we’d be at our Booth #221 for the general Lotusphere population. Here are the open showcase times where you can always find one of the team…

Lotus Domino Web Applications

Todd Weimer

by Todd Weimer, Lotus Practice Area Manager

For many years Lotus Domino developers have been creating new applications that are completely web-based. Typically a developer may perform some application administration through a Notes client but the majority of an application will be accessed through a web browser. That being said, many organizations still have a significant amount of completely Notes client based applications. Lotus Domino 8.5 has added many features that make it easier than ever to enable web access for your Notes client applications along with providing the same user experience. LotusSphere has sessions every year about “webifying” client applications but I have compiled a list of key issues and strategies.

Learn basic web technologies first, a good starting point is Html, CSS, JavaScript, and Xml. Try not to focus on how and where they all fit into Lotus Domino initially.

JavaScript is integral to Lotus Domino 8.5 with the introduction of XPages. Along with client-side JavaScript libraries, you can write server-side libraries that have access to JavaScript implementations of virtually the entire Notes object model. There are JavaScript implementations of most formula language functions as well.

To efficiently deliver the same (or better) user experience in a web browser, using AJAX and Dynamic Html (DHTML) are a must. Use an AJAX framework as a starting point (the Dojo framework is part of the 8.5 server) and supply data through agents, views, and web services. Consider using JSON for data structure as opposed to Xml for a lighter payload and more understandable JavaScript.

Lotus Domino applications can be accessed through the Notes client and web browser at the same time and the security model will be the same.

Make sure the ‘Anonymous’ user is configured to the appropriate level of access on the ACL of the application.

Java and LotusScript can both be used for server-side processing so if your workflow code resides in a LotusScript library(for example), you can leverage that for notes client processing as well as web request processing.
